Sweet Darkness

You must learn one thing.

The world was made to be free in.

Give up all the other worlds
except the one to which you belong.

Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet
confinement of your aloneness
to learn

anything or anyone
that does not bring you alive

is too small for you.

–David Whyte

This is one of David Whyte’s better poems. (Full confession: I am not a Whyte fan.) But today I had several conversations where the best commet I could offer was a version of Whyte’s closing idea: “anything or anyone/that does not bring you alive/is too small for you.” So I offer this as simple wisdom that may have timely meaning for you as well.

I am in New York for a few days, will be back online at the end of the week.
